Ural Owl

Ural Owl

A beautiful, large owl with as much as a five-foot wingspan, the Ural owl is named for the Ural Mountains of Russia in which it lives. The Ural owl can also be found as far west as Scandinavia and as far east as Japan. Though not considered endangered, biologists and conservationists have worked to protect this species. The introduction of special nesting boxes has helped the process. The Ural owl is now rated ‘of least concern’ in terms of extinction issues.

Ural Owl Videos: Here is a beautiful 2.5-minute video of a Ural owl in the wild. Here’s a fun 2-minute video of a pet Ural owl in which the owner is trying to retrieve the hamster from its clutches. No conclusion is shown, but the owl sure reminds me of my cat and how my kitty likes to have his forehead scratched. See what you think.

FunFacts about the Ural Owl: (Source)

  • Basic information, quote: The Ural owl (Strix uralensis) is a fairly large nocturnal owl. It is a member of the true owl family, Strigidae. The Ural owl is a member of the genus Strix, that is also the origin of the family’s name under Linnaean taxonomy. Both its common name and scientific name refer to the Ural Mountains of Russia where the type specimen was collected. However, this species has an extremely broad distribution that extends as far west as much of Scandinavia, montane eastern Europe, and, sporadically, central Europe across Eurasia broadly through Russia to as far east as Sakhalin and throughout Japan. • The Ural owl may have as many as 15 subspecies.
  • Though the Ural owl can survive on a variety of foods, it prefers small mammals, especially rodents like voles.
  • Ural owls nest in tree stumps and tree cavities but also have taken to special nest boxes provided by biologists and conservationists. The nest boxes have bolstered Ural owl populations and the species is rated ‘of least concern’ in terms of extinction issues.
  • The Ural owl has an unusually long tail, for an owl, that bears a wedge-shaped tip.
  • The Ural owl has pale-gray to white feathers overall with a slightly darker gray-brown back and mantle with contrasting whitish markings.
  • The Ural owl is a large owl and ranges in total length from 50 to 62 cm (20 to 24 in). The wingspan can reach up to five feet.
  • Ural owls pair for life and maintain a territory.
  • A clutch is usually 3-4 eggs.
  • Ural owls prefer the forest and stick to their home range.
