Arctic Fox

Arctic Fox

Beautiful in all white, the arctic fox blends well with the environment it’s named after. With an average head-and-body length of only 22 inches, and a typical weight of only 7 lbs., the arctic fox is a small species. The red fox is twice the size of the arctic fox and is one of its predators. With an average life expectancy of only 1 year in the wild, nature has provided for the arctic fox since a female can give birth to and successfully rear as many as 25 pups at a time when the food supply is plentiful. In a lean year, though, she may not reproduce at all.

  • Basic information, quote: The Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), also known as the white fox, polar fox, or snow fox, is a small fox native to the Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere and common throughout the Arctic tundra biome. It is well adapted to living in cold environments, and is best known for its thick, warm fur that is also used as camouflage. In the wild, most individuals do not live past their first year but some exceptional ones survive up to 11 years. Its body length ranges from 46 to 68 cm (18 to 27 in), with a generally rounded body shape to minimize the escape of body heat. (Source)
  • The diet of the arctic fox includes voles, fish, lemmings, waterfowl, seabirds, ringed seal pups, berries, insects, seaweed and carrion.
  • Arctic foxes are monogamous.
  • Both male and female raise the young together.
  • Arctic foxes live in underground dens where the young are raised.
  • Predators of the arctic fox are polar bears, grizzly bears, golden eagles, red foxes and wolverines.
  • Arctic foxes stay warm by avoiding the wind, staying inside their dens, and curling up into tight balls. They also increase their body weight by as much as 50% in the autumn to help insulate against the winter cold.
  • Arctic foxes do not hibernate.
  • When lemmings are abundant, the white fox can give birth to as many as 25 pups. With a life expectancy of only 1 year and with so many predators, nature has given the arctic fox the largest litter size in the order Carnivora.
