Pansies
My mother and grandmother both had beautiful gardens so I definitely got the gardening bug from them. I also recall pansies being a staple in the spring. I think pansies are one of the sweetest, friendliest looking flowers around. They all have faces to me and when the wind blows it looks like they are smiling, nodding and having a grand time.
This short video shares the differences between violas and pansies. Very nice. This short video discusses the need for deadheading to keep your pansies blooming consistently. Here’s a very short video on planting pansies.
FunFacts about Pansies: (Source)
- The common name for ‘pansy’ is ‘heartsease’.
- Pansies were originally considered an invasive weed.
- Here’s a basic scientific description of pansies including their origin, quote: The garden pansy is a type of large-flowered hybrid plant cultivated as a garden flower. It is derived by hybridization from several species in the section Melanium (“the pansies”) of the genus Viola, particularly Viola tricolor, a wildflower of Europe and western Asia known as ‘heartsease’. For simplicity, the older name Viola tricolor var. hortensis is often used. (Source)
- Pansies can be planted in the fall, are cold tolerant, and will bloom in the right environment from the fall through the winter and well into the spring.
- The pansy is regarded as a flower of ‘remembrance’. Its name derives from the French ‘pensée’ or ‘to think’.
- British horticulturalists began experimenting with ‘heartsease’ in the early 1800s. By 1833, there were over 400 varieties of pansies.
- Pansies are a bit heat and humidity sensitive. Heat will cause them to stop blooming and humidity creates rot.
- Some nicknames for pansies are, quote: “Three Faces under a Hood,” “Flame Flower,” “Jump Up and Kiss Me,” “Flower of Jove,” and “Pink of my John.” (Source)
- Here’s a fun, old adage, quote: American pioneers thought that “a handful of violets taken into the farmhouse in the spring ensured prosperity, and to neglect this ceremony brought harm to baby chicks and ducklings. (Source)

Above all: Live the fang!!!
I have always love pansies and their bright color mixes.
Pansies are so colorful and cheerful looking. I especially like the purple ones (my favorite color). I didn’t know they were cold tolerant; I might have to look into getting some for my garden.
The colours are just so beautiful. Only in nature….
The name I grew up using for the wild violas is ‘Johnny Jump Ups’ (Maine). Pansies have always been one of my favorite plants, love their gorgeous colors.
Amazing flowers. The designs on the inside remind me of when, as a child, I would dab dolors in the center of a paper and then fold the sheet in half. The design that was created on the opened paper was much like that on the pansy. So beautiful…like butterflies. (NYC)
These are very pretty. love all different colors.
Beautiful I love the dual colors
Such cute little faces!
They are really beautiful. Dramatic in a shy kind of way, not bold. They seem very happy and you smile just looking at them. In “Gone with the Wind” Pansy was the name first given to the heroine. Later they changed the name to Scarlett.
The Ice Cream Tulip is one of my favorite flowers. It is interesting that flowers can inspire certain emotions and feelings.
When I was younger pansies didn’t appeal to me. As I grew older they have become one of my favorite flowers. I love picture 5 , they are all pretty but something about the little ” face” is darling
Love, love pansies!
Here in NC they are considered a Fall into Spring flower. They will continue blooming through a mild winter.
I usually plant them in big clay pots in early February.
Squirrels love to eat pansies, especially the white ones, so I keep the pots on the front porch.
Presently, they are at the end of their cycle since it’s turning so warm here.
When I lived in New England, I would plant them in late spring, just the opposite of what I do here in NC.
Caris, you know I’m going to send you a few photos of them…LOL
Love pansies – they are just adorable and look like such a happy flower. Have had pansies in my garden. Have to get more. Love all the pictures but my favorites are #5 & #7. AZ
Pansies are simply beautiful! some of them look like they have a face.
My favorite flower. Now you know why I love them so. They are so hardy, as well as beautiful. Thank you.
Pansies are such lovely and happy signs of spring. The variety of colors available now in gardening catalogs is simply amazing. Thank you for the information.
They are so bright and pretty.

They look like they’re all smiling,, so pretty!! Loved pic #5 thank you
Pansies make me smile and so do these pictures.☺
I love pansies. They’re so pretty.
I also create paper pansies for some paper crafting.
denise from maryland
Pansies are one of my favorite flowers, and that’s one of the bad things about moving to TN (maybe the only bad thing). Their season here is over in what I consider the very early spring. I’d keep them on display all year if I could.
Such pretty little flowers, they always brighten things up! Lovely pictures!
they look lovely
Pansies, I think they look like they have little faces also. They remind me of the munchkins in the wizard of oz.
Pansies are my favorite flower. I especially like the little ones (sometimes called violas). And oh all the colors I love them all!
They are great and hard to kill.
One of my favorite flowers. Such sweet “faces”!!!!
Whenever I see pansies, I think about the garden scene in Alice in Wonderland.
I love these small but so colorful flowers. I work at a college campus and we have a ton of these everywhere. I call them feel good flowers…lol
I have loved pansies since I was a young girl, there are so many different colors to chose from. Since purple is my favorite color I usually get that color.
I love their happy little FACES.
Love pansies, we don’t have them in our garden but they’re such a beautiful flower! I love the photo of the angel statue with the flowers surrounding it.
From Pennsylvania, USA
My grandmother and mother had petunias, my grandpa however had the most beautiful rock garden filled with roses! I am partial to painted daisies.
So pretty. I like the purple and yellow ones the best.
The first thing that comes to mind when you say pansies is they have the sweetest faces. Live in south Alabama, never tried to grow them, but I like mix of red, purple and white.
Pansies are beautiful flowers. I love the pictures of close ups where you can make out what to see formed by their markings.
Hi from Morehead Kentucky, about 60 miles east of Lexington. I love pansies, Lowes had some on sale that had been left outside during a heavy rain storm. I didn’t get any but I might go back.
The bracelet is pretty, thanks for the chance.
Pansies are really pretty and sometimes cute flowers. Love them. And Sandra, you have some beautiful pansies, you must be very proud of them.
