A ‘megadiverse‘ country, Venezuela is ranked 7th in the world in terms of the number of species this country holds. But it’s no wonder given Venezuela’s extreme diversity in geography: from Caribbean coastal waters and islands, to intriguing deserts, to the majesty of the Andes Mountains, to arable plains and finally the beauty of the jungles of the Amazon basin. Venezuela has it all. The videos below showcase these beauties. If only life were simple, but today Venezuela has challenges on a political and economic level that are best explained in this video. Here’s hoping to a wonderful resolution for these troubles in the coming decade.

  • Basic information, quote: Venezuela, officially the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is a country on the northern coast of South America, consisting of a continental landmass and a large number of small islands and islets in the Caribbean Sea. The capital and largest urban agglomeration is the city of Caracas. It has a territorial extension of 916,445 km2 (353,841 sq mi). The continental territory is bordered on the north by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Colombia, Brazil on the south, Trinidad and Tobago to the north-east and on the east by Guyana.   • Some of the habitats Venezuela enjoys are the Andes Mountains in the west, the Amazon basin rain-forest in the south, the extensive llanos plains, the Caribbean coast and the Orinoco River Delta in the east.
  • Venezuela has 23 states.
  • The majority of the citizens live in the north especially in and around the capital city of Caracas.
  • In 1522, the area of South America now known as Venezuela was colonized by Spain.
  • Oil was discovered in the 20th century and today, Venezuela possesses the world’s largest oil reserves.

  • Venezuela has been inhabited for 15,000 years.
  • Colonized by Spain, Venezuela eventually sought its independence aided by the leadership of Francisco de Miranda. He was a Venezuelan marshal who had fought in the American Revolution and the French Revolution. Venezuela declared independence as the First Republic of Venezuela on 5 July 1811.
  • In the north, Venezuela has a 2,800 km (1,700 mi) coastline.
  • Venezuela borders Colombia to the west, Guyana to the east, and Brazil to the south.
  • Venezuela’s most important natural resources are petroleum and natural gas, iron ore, gold, and other minerals.
  • Venezuela is entirely located in the tropics and over the equator to 12 degrees north. The climate varies with elevation since the Andes Mountains take up a portion of the country. The highest peak is over 16,000 feet.
  • Venezuela suffers from continued deforestation.
  • Though Spanish is the main language of Venezuela, the constitution recognizes more than 30 indigenous languages. Many people of Venezuela are of mixed heritage, a combination of Spanish, indigenous peoples, and those of African descent. In addition, Venezuela has a number of Chinese, Italian and Portuguese citizens.
  • The population of Venezuela is 28 million
