With a pastoral landscape, Prince Edward Island has idyllic rolling hills, beautiful woodlands, sand dunes, salt water marshes, reddish-white sand beaches, ocean coves and gorgeous red sandstone cliffs. And of course, the author Lucy Maud Montgomery was inspired by the island for the setting of her classic novel Anne of Green Gables

Canada

Canada

Because I grew up in Mediterranean-like Southern California, not far from the beach, I always marveled at people who lived in the northern parts of the United States. All that snow in the winter, all that cold. Then I became aware that beyond the border of the northernmost reaches of our country, not including Alaska, there was an entire nation that must have even more snow, and cold and rough terrain. For me, that alone incites admiration for Canadians. Of course, here in the Valley of the Sun (the Phoenix area), we have a large number of Canadians who over-winter with us. I would, too! Winter in the desert is awesome.

This is a fabulous 2-minute video of Canadians sharing video clips of their Canada. Love. Here’s a 3-minute video featuring a wonderful overview of Canada.

FunFacts about Canada: (Source)

  • Basic Information, quote: Canada is a country in the northern part of North America. Its ten provinces and three territories extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean, covering 9.98 million square kilometres (3.85 million square miles.) Canada’s climate varies widely across its vast area, ranging from arctic weather in the north, to hot summers in the southern regions, with four distinct seasons. (Source)
  • By total land area, Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia.
  • The shared border between Canada and the United States is the longest bi-national border in the world.
  • Ottawa is the capital of Canada.
  • Canada’s three largest metro areas are Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.
  • Canada’s population is 37 million which overall makes Canada sparsely populated.
  • The majority of Canada’s land is dominated by forest and tundra.
  • 80 percent of Canada’s population is concentrated in medium to large cities most of which are near the border with the U.S.
  • Indigenous peoples or Aboriginal Canadians inhabited this part of North America for thousands of years before the arrival of the Europeans. These are known as the First Nations, Inuit and Métis.
  • Both the British and French explored and settled along the Atlantic coast of Canada in the 16th Century. Armed conflicts followed. In 1763, France ceded most of its North American colonies.
  • In 1863, Canada was formed as a federal dominion of four provinces.
  • Today, Canada is a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II being the head of state.
  • As a product of large-scale immigration, Canada is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world.
  • The name ‘Canada’ comes from a St. Lawrence Iroquoian word kanata, which means ‘village’ or ‘settlement’.
  • The maple leaf is a prominent symbol of Canada and is part of the national flag. Other symbols are the beaver, the Canada Goose and the common loon.
  • English and French are the official languages of Canada.
  • Canada is one of the most educated countries in the world.
